The Scarborough Flyer
Every Friday from 1st August to 29th August 2008
This is a special steam train service for the summer, running every Friday from 1st August until 29th August. The Scarborough Flyer will run between Crewe, Warrington, Manchester Victoria, Huddersfield, Wakefield, York and Scarborough and it will be steam hauled in both directions. We have a pool of three magnificent steam locomotives, all Pacifics and restored to top operating condition for hauling these trains. They are 6201 Princess Elizabeth, 60009 Union of South Africa and 71000 Duke of Gloucester.
At around 07:30 the Scarborough Flyer will steam out of Crewe and head north along the West Coast main line. After picking up further passengers at Warrington we leave the West Coast main line at Earlstown and head for Manchester Victoria, where we collect further passengers.
Our train departs Manchester Victoria and our steam locomotive immediately has to work hard to climb Miles Platting Bank. We continue through Stalybridge with its famous buffet, on the climb to Standedge tunnel, through the Pennines, one of the longest in the UK. From the tunnel we drop down to pick up further customers at Huddersfield, then join the Old Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to Wakefield Kirkgate. Our train heads through Castleford to York where our steam locomotive takes on water.
York is a fascinating city to visit at any time of the year, with a huge variety of places to see, such as the Minster, The Shambles, the Jorvik Centre and the superb National Railway Museum. Open topped buses leave from York Railway Station for tours around the city.
You may leave the train at York or carry on to Scarborough.
On leaving York, we take the Scarborough line immediately crossing the River Ouse with views of the Minster. We should have a fast run along the Vale of York before slowing for the curves to follow the river past Kirkham Abbey. Soon we pass through Malton continuing from here through Seamer to Scarborough.
Scarborough is the most popular seaside resort in Yorkshire and perhaps the whole East Coast. It has everything you would expect from an established seaside resort, with two stunning bays, the North Bay and South Bay.
