The Scarborough Flyer
Saturday 12th July 2008
You are invited to join the BR Pacific 71000 Duke of Gloucester as it hauls a wonderful vintage train from East Anglia to York and Scarborough.
We will depart Norwich Station around 08:00 in the morning and call to pick up more passengers at Wymondham, Attleborough, Thetford and Brandon before heading for Peterborough where we join the East Coast Main Line. This is the old stamping ground for Pacifics and we are hoping for a good climb of Stoke Bank. The Mallard achieved the world record for steam going at 126 miles per hour down this very hill.
After passing the summit, the train should breeze through the attractive countryside via Newark to Doncaster’s mail platform where our locomotive will take water. Duke of Gloucester will continue northwards to York where we will arrive around 12:30. York is a fascinating place to visit at any time of the year. You can take a boat trip down the River Ouse, walk round the ancient city walls or visit York Minster and climb the tower for magnificent views of the city. Or perhaps you would prefer to do some souvenir shopping in the Shambles, one of the oldest shopping streets in York, or immerse yourself in some of the local history and experience the Jorvik Viking Centre, the York Dungeon or climb up Clifford’s Tower for more views of the city. Many of you will want to visit the National Railway Museum of course, and can combine this with a ride on York’s equivalent of the London Eye. For those of you who would prefer to spend the day by the sea, the train continues to Scarborough where you can sunbathe on the beach, visit the funfair or take shelter in the arcades if the weather proves to be typically English.
We depart Scarborough at 16:00 hauled by our steam locomotive to York where we stop to pick up our customers and replace Duke of Gloucester with a diesel locomotive. From York we return to Norwich diesel hauled setting down passengers where they originally joined the train.
