The Royal Scot
Saturday 13th September 2008
This is a very special tour along the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to Carlisle and back again. The 6233 Duchess of Sutherland will provide the power between Crewe and Carlisle and over the famous Shap Summit.
We will depart London Euston at 07:00 with diesel traction as we head north picking up more passengers at Watford Junction, Milton Keynes, Rugby, Nuneaton, Lichfield and Crewe.
At Crewe the Maroon Giant 6233 Duchess of Sutherland will take over the train. We anticipate a fast run through Warrington and Wigan to Preston where we will call to pick up our last clients.
After Oxenholme the gradient begins to increase and it is a substantial climb up to Grayrigg Summit. Soon we will be passing through the scenic Lune Gorge.
After Tebay we commence our assault on Shap, a major obstacle in the days of Steam. Shap Summit, about 2¼ miles south of the former Shap station, is the highest point on the West Coast Main Line from London to Glasgow, at 914ft above sea level.
After Shap Summit we commence our descent, skirting the Lake District and passing through Penrith before arriving in Carlisle. We will stay here for two hours giving you time to explore the largest settlement in Cumbria, perhaps to see the castle (built in 1092 and still relatively intact), the cathedral or the museum.
Alternatively you might use the time to potter around the shops or find somewhere for refreshment.
The Duchess returns our train to Crewe via the West Coast Main line. The train will be hauled between London Euston and Crewe and between Crewe and London Euston by a modern diesel, setting down passengers as on the outward journey.
