The Heart of Midlothian
Saturday 31st May 2008
This is an exciting trip via Yorkshire and Durham to Edinburgh returning steam hauled with the magnificent steamlined A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa.
We will depart Sheffield at 07:30 hauled by a diesel locomotive. We will call to pick up passengers at Meadow Hall, Doncaster, York, Darlington and Newcastle before arriving at the Scottish capital Edinburgh. Around 4 hours will be available to explore this fine city. Edinburgh Waverley Station is centrally situated in the city and a good base to explore what this city has to offer. With streets steeped in history and a thriving cultural scene, Edinburgh offers the perfect balance between all things traditional and contemporary. You can see picture-postcard views, explore mysterious winding streets, gaze upon elegant terraces and visit an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants. You might want to visit the Golden Mile, Edinburgh Castle or the Princes Street Gardens.
We will depart Edinburgh Waverley late afternoon, steam hauled by A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa. We will pass through Dunbar with fine views over the North Sea.
We will then climb up to Granthouse before we drop down to Berwick-upon-Tweed with more fine coastal views. At Berwick we will stop briefly while the locomotive takes on water.
On departure we will cross the magnificent curved Royal Border Bridge over the Tweed Estuary.
After Chathill you should be able to enjoy views over to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and on leaving Alnmouth you will be able to enjoy beautiful views of this seaside town. We will set down at Newcastle before crossing the King Edward Bridge, again with stunning views over the city and the other six bridges across the Tyne.
Soon after Durham, we will cross Durham Viaduct with a gorgeous outlook onto the Cathedral and then should enjoy a fast run along the racing stretch between Darlington and York. On arrival at York we change to diesel traction for the run to Sheffield setting down at all the outward stations.
