The Heart of Midlothian
Saturday 24th May 2008
For this tour we have arranged the magnificent streamlined A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa to haul our special train from York to Edinburgh. This is the line where this locomotive spent most of its life operating the express trains of the LNER and later British Railways.
Our train, hauled by a diesel locomotive, departs Huddersfield around 07:30am and calls to pick up further passengers at Dewsbury and Leeds. Our final pick up point is York where our steam locomotive 60009 takes over for the run to Edinburgh. We look forward to a fast run along the racing stretch of the East Coast Main Line to Darlington. On the approach to Durham we cross a fine viaduct with views of its Cathedral. Approaching Newcastle Central Station we cross the King Edward Bridge, one of six across the Tyne, with wonderful views of the City. From Newcastle we slow down to pass through Morpeth and later we have fine views of the attractive seaside town of Alnmouth. Later, near Chathill, and if the day is clear, we will be able to view Holy Island out in the distance. We cross the magnificent Royal Border Bridge and enter Berwick-upon-Tweed where our steam locomotive will take water. On leaving Berwick we enjoy some fine views over the North Sea before climbing up to Granthouse. We pass through Dunbar with fine views over the Forth Estuary before arriving at the Scottish capital Edinburgh.
There is over four hours to explore this fine city. Waverley Station is centrally situated and is a good base from which to explore Edinburgh. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With Scotland’s most famous castle dominating the city skyline, there is plenty to see and do with the perfect balance between all things traditional and contemporary.
We return to York, Leeds and Huddersfield diesel hauled.
