The Great Northern
Saturday 28th February 2009
This is a special steam hauled train from Cleethorpes, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and other North Lincolnshire stations to London Kings Cross hauled by Britannia Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell. The Britannia’s hauled the London to North Lincolnshire trains in the 1950’s and early ‘60’s.
Our train will be formed of refurbished MK1 coaches and the carriages have large picture windows and Pullman style seating in first and premier classes.
This will be the first time that 70013 Oliver Cromwell has worked a train out of Cleethorpes for 40 years and will depart around 07:15 calling to pick up further passengers at Grimsby, Barnetby, Scunthorpe, Crowle and Doncaster. We head southwards from Doncaster on the East Coast Main Line. After taking water at Retford we start the sprint down the East Coast Main Line passing through Grantham and down Stoke Bank to Peterborough where there is another water stop. We continue south through Huntingdon,
St Neots and Stevenage before arriving at London Kings Cross.
Most customers will have their own preference in London. There will be over four hours in London, which is ample time to see the sights, perhaps on a cruise on the Thames. Of course there will also be the chance to visit the shops of the infamous Oxford Street, or for those who are not eating on the train, to have a meal in one of the many restaurants.
Oliver Cromwell will haul our train from Kings Cross to Peterborough and then a diesel locomotive will haul our train back to Cleethorpes setting down at the stations as on the outward journey.
