It will be railway history in the making! Join us aboard a special train to celebrate the re-opening of the Sheringham Crossing and be among the first since 1963 to cross the road by steam hauled train. This really will be a momentous occasion.
Our special train, steam-hauled by 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’, will depart from London Kings Cross at around 08:40 and follow the Great Eastern main line through suburban Essex.
At Norwich our steam hauled locomotive will take on water and a diesel locomotive will couple on to the back of the train and haul us onto the Bittern Line at Whittingham Junction. We head northwest through rural Norfolk with its lovely scenery peppered with occasional windmills. Then it’s on through Wroxham, the capital of Broadland, and if we are lucky we may see a narrow gauge steam train on the Bure Valley Railway. We pass through Worstead (after whom worsted cloth is named) and North Walsham. From here our line curves above Cromer and we enjoy fine views as we descend to the former Cromer Beach Station.
From Cromer, ‘Oliver Cromwell’ will haul our train through West Runton. As we approach Sheringham station our train will be part of the formal opening celebrations of the new crossing (we will be the first train across for 40 years).Following this we continue through to Weybourne and Holt. We retrace our steps back to Sheringham and here we change over passengers.
Due to the length restriction on the Sheringham Branch customers will have the choice of travelling outward from Norwich to Sheringham by our special steam train or from Sheringham to Norwich but not both.
From Norwich ‘Oliver Cromwell’ steam hauls us back to London Liverpool Street to end a truly historic day.
